They say it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert in any one activity, and we believe this applies to game development and computer science in general. This blog is our way of expressing that journey with readers. While primarily about game development, we'll explore many ideas related to it and computer science as a whole as we progress and master our craft. Our hope is that by seeing the path we have taken we help someone on their path as well.

Success(Cont. By John), My Drive, and The Future!
YAY! finally me and Jared have built something Playable and moderately worth showing. Its been a long week and a half of working an average of like 13 hours a day but I feel like it turned out well!
If you want to see Jared's Post is 'should' be below, this one hahaha
Me and Jared have been trying to make ANYTHING for a long time now, this proves not only to others but to ourselves that we can do something, get something done, and to me that means a lot. My dreams are slowly but surely coming true, and I plan to continue forward in this direction. I'm really happy with how it turned out, but with anything, There's so many things I would have done different had we more time. But overall its good for a first run.
More insight into my personal drive for the project, and the future of this project and others after the Jump
My Games, My passion, My Drive
This might be kinda long and Not interesting unless you want to know about me:
Games have been my passion since I was as young as I can remember. which I know is something people say all the time, but I feel like my passion for games runs deeper then most.
Growing up I was a huge gamer and I loved all things video games. I grew up in a Growing tech environment. with my dad being a software engineer, I got to see lots of computer stuff growing up. around 6 years old was when i started getting into games really hard, and some of my favorite PC games were DOS games, to run them my dad taught me about file systems and how to navigate the system using command line only. this experience was the basis of a lot of things had I been born a year later, I would have been learning windows 95 and may have never needed to learn Commands. the most memorable experiences were Home Alone for DOS, Fury 3 for Windows, and Myst(I wont even get into how Myst changed my life)
The same year I got my Sega Genesis and I found my childhood hero: Sonic the hedgehog. Since then I have played EVERY Sonic game since, and I have to say that as a whole, Sonic has been instrumental to my desire to make games. the Genesis era for me was probably the most influincal as the constant flow of new games inspired me with every new game from Battletech, to Vectorman, to Earthworm Jim, and Shining Force.
then in 97 a year late, I jumped on the Pokemon bandwaggon. This was where I started studying the core of games. I needed to understand every intricate detail of every game I played. It was also this year that I started playing Magic: The Gathering.
fast forward to Christmas 2000 and I get my Sega Dreamcast. I was awed by the amazing graphics and speed. it was then that I determined I needed to know how to make games like this, I had been playing games so long but now I was sure I knew what I wanted to do... Make Games...
2002 rolls up and My dad picks up the Original Xbox, and its the first time that me and him really play games "together" as before that we would play single player games in the same room but not together. I was introduced to the Shooter genre with Time Spliters, Halo, and Partially Sudeki(on my list of top games)
it was then that I found THE most influential game that wasn't a sonic title, Beyond Good and Evil. this game was easily the best game I had ever played, Fighting Aliens! Government Corruption! Espionage! Kidnapping! Photography? Literally there was NOTHING wrong with this game, besides the fact that it took some time to get into the story. if you haven't played it. find a copy and give it a go.
Fast forward to High School I meet Jared! and we talk about games all the time,I don't exactly know when but at one point he mentions wanting to make games. Time goes on come to find me and jared have a computer class together! granted it was only HTML but still me and him NAILED HTML so easily that we had time to do things like RPG Maker, only to find out a couple years later that we also had AP Computer Science together where we learned Java together. which was the start of our programming journey.
Toward the end of High school I was asked by my career councilor, "John, what do you want to do for a career?" I told her right away "Make Video Games." what I expected was 'that's going to be hard work' but instead, I got told "Its a competitive industry, its not likely that you will, you should consider picking a more reasonable career"
Now I wont say this game is anywhere near something of AAA status but the fact that it exists is a Milestone of what we are capable of accomplishing. TAKE THAT!
The Future!
So me and Jared are out of time on our week of adventure into trying to make one game, so come next week our time will be limited to basically nothing. Our lives outside this project need us again.
I'm going to be moving onto another project, as my job is slightly less taxing on my free time. when me and Jared have some free time we'll come back to this one, but in my case I will be switching gears to another project keeping in mind that this project was hugely sucessful
My next project will likely be a platform game for Android devices. I like android, more then a few evices I own are android based, so it only makes sense. If I release something for android and it gets good reviews and is relatively popular, I may port it to iOS. But for now I don't have too much info because I haven't begun designing it yet. Ill keep this updated if Jared will let me hahaha!
So to that,
Thank you Jared for being there, and Dealing with my stupidity.
Thanks to the friends who were moderately understanding when I told them I was busy.
AND didn't complain when I got lost in code and forgot to text them back for 5 hours!
Thanks to my family for not kicking me out of the house and giving me gas money! Love you!
and Thanks to those people who regardless of if they ACTUALLY are interested, would listen to me rant on and on about this project. You know who you are :)
Stupidity, John? We both had an equal share on everything in this game :) I'm just the coder, it was your lead and intuition on games that made that code successful!
